Travel through the birthplace of American railroading on this 8-day autumn adventure. The dazzling fall foliage will amaze you as you travel through colorful vistas onboard five scenic rail excursions, including an extra-special journey through West Virginia’s New River Gorge on the New River Train, which only operates twice a year.
Baltimore and Ohio Railroad is one of the oldest railroads in the United States and the first common carrier railroad. Start off with time in Baltimore, which includes a city tour and visits to the B&O Railroad Museum and US Naval Academy. Then settle into Elkins, West Virginia for a three-night stay. You'll enjoy rides on a variety of trains that take you through the mountain wilderness for tranquil, scenic views. Stop at the National Radio Observatory and later enjoy a great dinner and musical revue.
Then it's on to Monongahela National Forest and White Sulphur Springs for a visit to the luxurious and historic Greenbrier Resort. Enjoy the local Hinton Railroad Days before you board Amtrak’s Cardinal back to Chicago.
Day 1 – Arrive Baltimore
Arrive in Baltimore and settle into your hotel, where you will meet your tour manager. You then have free time to venture out on your own for some Baltimore crab or to a local Brew Pub. Overnight Baltimore.
Day 2 – Baltimore City Tour / B&O Railroad Museum / U.S. Naval Academy
Start your day with a city tour of Baltimore, which includes a stop at the Fort McHenry National Monument. Then visit the B&O Railroad Museum for a self-guided tour of the most important railroad collection in America. Enjoy lunch on your own before visiting Annapolis, Maryland, home to the US Naval Academy. Take a walking tour of the historic campus and enjoy dinner at the Naval Academy Club. Day 3 – Western Maryland Scenic Railroad
Travel to Cumberland, MD for a ride on the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad. Afterwards, take a motorcoach into Elkins, WV where you have a free evening to enjoy this quaint historic town. Overnight Elkins, WV. (L)
Day 4 - Cass Scenic Railroad / Cheat Mountain Salamander
Today is full of railroad adventure, as you relax onboard two scenic West Virginia trains. First, start with the Cass Scenic Railroadand then meet the Cheat Mountain Salamander for a ride into the high mountain wilderness of West Virginia. Overnight Elkins, WV. (B, L)
Day 5 – Durbin Rocket / National Radio Observatory
Ride in one of only three remaining Climax geared logging locomotives on the planet. The ride follows the banks of the Greenbrier River into the West Virginia wilderness, where you end the ride at the Durbin Depot for lunch. Then visit the National Radio Observatory in Green Bank, WV before returning to the hotel in Elkins. Tonight dinner is included at the Railyard Restaurant, followed by the “Greatest Show on Rails" musical revue. Overnight Elkins, WV. (B, L, D)
Day 6 – Greenbrier Resort
Journey through the colorful Monongahela National Forest to White Sulphur Springs, the home of The Greenbrier Resort. In 1958 the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway secretly built a bunker underneath the hotel for the possible evacuation of the President, Senate and House of Representatives if war broke out during the Cold War. A docent takes you on the Bunker Tour before free time to enjoy the scenery and shops of this historic resort. Overnight Huntington, WV. (B, L)
Day 7 – New River Train in Premium Class
Today, embark on a scenic fall foliage rail journey through the New River Gorge aboard the New River Train to Hinton, WV. Admire the autumn colors of West Virginia in Premium Class, where you will dine on freshly prepared breakfast and dinner and enjoy soft drinks, coffee and water throughout the trip. Arrive in Hinton, WV for a visit to their annual Hinton Railroad Days. Return to Huntington aboard the New River Train this the evening to board Amtrak’s Cardinal overnight to Chicago. Day 8 – Tour Conclusion
Your fall foliage journey onboard some of America’s most historic trains ends late this morning as the Cardinal arrives at Chicago’s Union Station.
